ReActiv8 Neurostimulation
ReActiv8 is a neuromodulation device implanted in your body that sends an electrical impulse to the multifidus muscle around your spine to relieve chronic low back pain due to muscle dysfunction. This low back pain could have been caused by an injury or stress on the body's structures surrounding the spine, including joints, muscles, tendons or other bones. The device sends an electrical impulse to activate your muscle to restore its function, allowing you to build strength and relieving pain.
Who Benefits
You may be a candidate for ReActiv8 if you experience:
- Pain while sitting or standing in the same position for extended periods
- Pain during common everyday activities requiring bending, such as brushing teeth, washing dishes, or reaching for items
- Needing to use your arms to return to a standing position after bending
What to Expect
ReActiv8 involves a minimally invasive outpatient implantation procedure - leads are placed next to nerves outside of the spinal canal and connected to an implanted pulse generator (IPG). The patient then controls the stimulation therapy with a handheld remote during two 30-minute sessions per day, which allows the system to contract and relax the multifidus muscle via the stimulation of the medial branch nerve. The ReActiv8 procedure is also reversible as it does not alter or change the structure of the spine.

After the Procedure
- You will be monitored afterward and go home with a driver the same day.
- Post-op instructions will be provided to you.
- The ReActiv8 device will be turned on at a follow-up visit, 10-14 days after surgery.
- Recovery typically takes four to six weeks.
- While patients typically can feel where the IPG is located with their hands, after 60-90 days the body heals around it to the point where it's less perceptible.

Risks and Considerations
While generally safe and reversible, potential risks include:
- Infection
- Device malfunction
- Continued back pain
- Movement of lead wire within your body (lead migration)
These side effects usually require an additional surgery to either remove the device or fix a problem.
